Fun Fact ~ Afternoon Tea was introduced in England by Anna, seventh Duchess of Bedford, in 1840. At that time the evening meal was served fashionably late, around eight o’clock. This late meal left the Duchess a little hungry around four o’clock. The solution for the Duchess was a pot of tea and light snack taken privately in her boudoir during the afternoon. Later friends were invited to join her in her rooms and this summer practice proved so popular that the Duchess continued it when she returned to London. Other social hostess quickly picked up the practice and before long all fashionable society was sipping tea and nibbling on sandwiches in the afternoon.
